I was at my doc's office on Saturday to get blood drawn for a full blood screening...while I was there, he also recommended doing a UA. So off to the bathroom I go, to pee in a cup. As I was paying my bill, he must have ran the urine test and said it came back showing white cells in my urine. He said that's not normal. I asked what it could be...and he said, maybe a bladder infection. He put me on a 3-day course of Ciprofloxacin, which is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. The thing is...I don't have any symptoms of a bladder infection. Should I have questioned his diagnosis? Should my doc have done more testing before writing out a script for the Cipro? I hate questioning his motives, but sometimes I wonder if he's not being thorough enough.
Hi - It is possible to have a bladder infection without symptoms. More extensive testing would probably show the type of bacteria and it makes it easier to match with an antibiotic......My doc probably woud've waited before giving me Cipro, esp. since you are not in pain. The quick urine test that he did, may have also shown that in addition to wbc, he also saw nitrites (sp) that is another indication of infection - if it did, this maybe convinced him that you do have an infection and to treat it right away.
Hi...thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was wondering if it was possible to have a bladder infection with no symptoms...so thanks for answering my question. I just ran over another urine sample after taking the Cipro for 3 days, so hopefully the test will come back clean.
