fainting on first day of period?

I almost passed out in a work meeting. I ran to the bathroom and sure enough my period just started. Obviously I have not lost tons of menstral blood yet, so that cannot be causing the fainting and dizziness. I do not have bad cramps, so I'm not passing out from the pain. This feeling has happened to me before, maybe my body just gets shocked at the changing hormone levels?

What the heck is it? I'd go to the doctor, but they pretty much ignore me and say I have anxiety.

Re: fainting on first day of period?

menstrual related anemia. i used to get bad cramps and really light headed when i was a teenager from my period. the blood loss was enough to make me anemic during my period. I literally used to faint almost every month.

The only thing that made it better was getting on birth control. and multi vitamins!

Re: fainting on first day of period?

My mom use to pass out off and on from that first day of her period. She never knew the cause but she use to tell me about it all the time. Even now after all these years(she is now 95) she recalls those mysterious times she would pass out. I suppose it is just a shift in body fluids/hormones/pain that hit some gals harder than others. She wasn't frail or anything...grew up on a farm so but seems she suffered a great deal every month. I would think though doctors would have an answer by now 50+years later..and in this day and age the answer shouldn't be anxiety. I would be curious as to what your doctors do say today...perhaps you might ask for the rest of us next time you go in and see if there is something to prevent it. I think even my mom would like to know.

I'm not anemic, I actually have very short and light periods too. Since it's the first day, I haven't lost any blood yet either. So weird.

Re: fainting on first day of period?

Yep its happened to me and ive actually passed out full on out cold because of it.

Its a change in hormones. Pregnant women pass out not because they have a baby in the womb, but because their hormones are going crazy, its the same thing.

Horrible feeling.
