Oof, that's a bit more complex as complex cysts need to be examined to see if they are functional or not. Most simple cysts are functional (although some aren't) but complex cysts can be something other than functional like dermoids, endometriomas or hemorrhagic cysts (these are simply cysts that bleed into themselves). Usually a radiologist can give an educated guess as to what type of cyst you have by the way it looks on the ultrasound.
