Hope you can help me. My doctor put me on a course of 200mg Prometrium to bring on a period. I am 62 years old and am very post menopausal.

I had a vaginal ultrasound done and it showed a thickened uterine lining and a polyp. The endometrial biopsy came back fine, but she's telling me I need to shed the lining in the hopes of shedding the polyp with it.

I finished my last Prometrium 5 days ago. No period yet. I do have some slight cramping and back pain. So when do you think I may get this period? I hope I do and I hope it works because I'd rather not go thru a D+C for a benign polyp.

I have never heard of Prometrium causing you to shed a polyp. I thought those had to be removed. Do you know how thick your uterine lining was?

Sorry - I don't know how thick the lining is. Interesting --- my internist also told me she thinks this progesterone therapy that will cause a period COULD cause the polyp to shed, too.

I'm starting to wonder if both the GYN and the INTERN are out of touch with the right protocol.

Anyway --- assuming we give them the benefit of the doubt, how long after my last Promterium should I expect a period?

The Prometrium would be the first thing to try for the thickened lining, I have just never heard of it causing the polyp to come out too.

I think you are supposed to start within 2 weeks, but I have heard of it not working at all with some women. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works for you.

I'm only 35 but I've had these polyps removed 4 times in the last 3 years. They keep growing back. I can tell you from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE that those things will NOT disloge themselves, they need to be surgically removed through a hysteroscopy and then subsequent D&C to thin out the uterus again.

I've had this done so many times I know all about it. What do you need to know?

Don't just get a blind D&C without hysteroscopy because they will not get the polyp. The whole point of why the surgeon (in my case it was my gyne) uses the hysteroscope is to be able to see the polyp and remove it correctly. If you just get an ordinary D&C, the procedure will just brush over the polyp and it will not remove it completely. I know this for a fact, and I really hope your doc won't insist on doing a blind D&C.

What else do you need to know? I can tell you everything, I'm a total expert on this whole thing by now.
