Everything I've ever read about dysplasia is that it's always accompanied by an abnormal pap smear.
I've never had an abnormal pap. For two years now, I've had a thick yellow discharge and severe vaginal burning/irritation, although tests for everything have come back negative and my vaginal flora all looks perfect. During the time I've had these symptoms, I have had paps done and they've come back normal.
I finally saw a new doctor last week who looked over all my records and did an exam, and said she doesn't see anything indicating an infection, so she was guessing something along the lines of dysplasia. She did a colposcopy today and took several tissue samples, and explained what the treatment will be if the biopsy shows dysplasia.
So, is it really possible that this is my problem, even with normal pap smears the whole time? I've also never had HPV, which I've also read almost always accompanies dysplasia. I do fall into some of the other risk categories for dysplasia, but HPV and abnormal pap aren't either of them...has anyone else ever had dysplasia without having either of these?

The Pap is a merely screening test and it can miss dysplasia/abnormalities. The biopsy from your colposcopy will give you a solid answer as far as the dysplasia is concerned.
No, I've never had an HPV test done since I've never had an abnormal pap.
I guess I'll wait and see what happens with the biopsy results. It's strange, but I'm really hoping they do indicate dysplasia or SOMETHING, so that I finally have an answer!
