Period Question

My period had been regular. Then I skipped February and March. I had a pap smear, pelvic exam, and pregnancy test in April, and everything came back negative. I got my period finally at the end of April, and got the next period at the end of May. My next one is scheduled for the end of June, however I started to spot yesterday and it's slightly heavier today. I've read that it's possible to bleed when you're ovulating, but it's slightly more than spotting, but less than a period. I have mild cramping. Either way, I have never bled mid cycle before. My questions are the following:

1. What types of tests do I need to rule out anything bad? Just an ultrasound?
2. Does having an irregular period affect anything other than having a baby? If they find no tumors, no cysts, or anything, is there any reason to pursue why my period has suddenly changed?
3. Would a hormonal blood test be helpful?

Mainly... what types of tests would you recommend, and how dangerous is an irregular period if they cannot find anything wrong?
