Hi all! I have a question that I hope someone here can assist me with. I have an area in my right breast that has been quite painful for a couple of months. I have noticed it off and on, but right now, while in my period, it doesn't hurt anymore. I have done self-breast exams (the best I know how!) and don't feel any lumps. But like I said, it has been quite painful at times. Sometimes I can't even let my husband near me, for fear he will rub against it, and other times I have to push on the breast to see if it is still painful. The spot is mainly right below my nipple, but sometimes hurts all the way down to my breast bone. I unfortunately do have larger breasts so the weight of them makes it worse. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Do you have to have a lump to have breast cancer? Thank you in advance!
Sounds to me like you may have cystic breasts which is probably nothing to be worried about. My doctor said it is very common. It hurts more right before your period and then subsides until the next cycle starts kicking in with estrogen.
Believe me, I can understand how painful it is, it feels like they're so tender that even if you bump into something it's enough to make you cringe! I have the same thing and can actually feel small cysts; then a few days after the period starts they disappear and that's when I do my monthly breast self exam.
The best advice I can give is to see your doctor and let him evaluate it if only to put your mind at ease. Most likely, it's only a hormone related symptom.
You might try eliminating caffeine and cut down on salt too, that helps.
I would suggest you see your doctor with this one. Chances are, it may be hormone related but better to get it checked out. I don't know your age but breast cancer is possible in younger women although more rare. You can have breast cancer without a lump. I had a "lumpectomy" otherwise known as open excisional biopsy about a month ago because of suspicious findings on my routine mammogram. Luckily, it was not cancerous but if it had been, I would never have known because there was never a lump.
Also, many people say if it is painful, then it is not cancerous. Not true. Some breast cancer causes pain and some doesn't. Chances are, you are fine but if it is causing you that much pain you should get it checked out. Your doctor may also have suggestions for managing the pain. One more thing - I also have fibrocystic breast and have had 2 needle aspirations to biopsy the fluid in the cysts. You can usually feel the cysts and they can be moved around when you touch them. Since you are not feeling any lumps, I think it is probably best to get it checked out.
I am not trying to scare you but I was plenty scared when something suspicious showed up on my mammogram - something I had no knowlege of since I had no symptoms. Good luck and keep us posted. It may help someone else who reads this forum.
Have you had any mamograms done? If not i would ask dr to get you a prescription for one.. You didn't say how old you were (or young), but i would suggest this anyway, i found my first lump when i was 24, i've so far had 3 lumpectomies. Not fun, but does give u peace of mind.
Usually cancerous tumors don't hurt. My guess that this is a fibroid. Do you drink a lot of caffiene? Do you smoke? Caffiene and nicotine are the main causes of these but non-smokers can also get fibroids. They are generally very small so you can't feel them, but they can get extremely sore making you aware of their presence. Also, since your period can cause breast tenderness maybe this is just a sign of PMS. Just for precaution I reccomend that you see a doctor so that he/she can figure out what it is. It's better safe than sorry. Good luck...
~Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.~
Not all fibroids are uterine. I have had fibroid andinomas (sp??) removed from my breast in the past. Also have cysts. Could be almost anything causing the pain. Best to just have it checked out for your own peace of mind.
I am very concerned. I am 22 years old and for the past month I have had tenderness in my left breast. I have been doing self exams regularly and I found a small lump about the size of a pea and it moves around very easily. In fact when I went to show my boyfriend,I couldn't find it! I went to the doctor and when she did an exam, she couldn't find it either.I was put on anti inflammatory medication for the tenderness and was set up with an appointment to see a surgeon/specialist.What I don't understand is I was told that if I had a mammagram nothing would show because of my age.My breasts aren't dense so whats up with that? I'm also on Depo Provera. Any ideas what this could be? <p>[This message has been edited by llalucas (edited 12-11-2002).]
Mine have always been sore off and on, so I talked to my OBGYN. She recommended that I try a Vitamin E supplement. I was pretty skeptical, but it has helped tremedously!!
You know, breast tenderness is not really something you should mess around with, though. I think if I were you, I would see my doctor, and, once you rule out anything serious, you can then try the Vitamin E supplements. That's just my opinion, though.
