Red bumps on back of my tongue..boyfriend now has them.
Please give any advice you can. I'm freaking out here. I'm a 30 year old woman and I noticed the other day I have some big red bumps on the very back of my tongue. I noticed them a few days after I bit my tongue back there really hard but that the bumps are not in just the place I bit down but all across the back. They are dark red and much bigger than regular taste buds and look like large papillea or maybe even warts? I'm not sure how long theyve been back there. Now yesterday my boyfriend noticed the back of his tongue was a little sore so he looked back there and sure enough he has the same big bumps now.
A little history on me. I just recently got over a mild case of colonitis and my Dr put me on antibiotics which quickly cleared up. I asked my Dr about a small papillea that suddenly popped up on my left buttock and she said they are common no biggie but this was before I noticed what was going on in my mouth.
I'm concerned about this, is this a virus or possiblty an STD? Are these warts or will they go away?
We've been dating 3 months, totally monogamous, before we got intimate we both got blood tests done just to be safe and we both were clean. He hadnt been intimate with anyone for a while since he just got divorced. Because I'm paranoid I got a very specific detailed blood test 30 days later and again, was negative on everything so I'm not concerned about HIV although I'm a little overly paranoid about it. I do have HPV i think but have never had any warts, and only 1 abnormal pap a few years ago, but have had normal ones since.
I did come down with herpes II about 6.5 years ago but have only had 1 breakout since my first and that was a year ago.
Is it possible my HPV spread to the tongue even though I have never had warts?
Can somebody give me some advice? Should I call my Dr or dentist?
Re: Red bumps on back of my tongue..boyfriend now has them.
Hi thank you for your reply. What bothers me is that my boyfriend now has them. I dont examine the very back of my tongue very often, but for some reason I dont think they are tastebuds.
Does everyone else have these big bumps back there?

Since you were just on antibiotics you most likely have thrush aka a yeast infection. See your doc and get this checked out. Always remember to eat plenty of yogurt with live active cultures or to take acidophillis capsules when you are taking antibiotics to be help prevent yeast infections. You boyfriend should also be see to be sure he doesn't have the infection too.

Hi Thanks for your info. It is not thrush I dont believe as thrush is a heavy white coating I thought. Its not that oral leukepia stuff either. my tongue is pink and looks perfectly normal except for the bumps in the back.
I called my DR and she says its some virus probably that I passed on to my boyfriend and that the bumps might go away by themselves. I'm seeing her later this month anyways for my depo shot so if they are still there I'll show her then. I'm also seeing my dentist on Monday for a cleaning so maybe he can tell me.
I'm just paranoid thats all. I need to stop worrying about stuff all the time.

I'm glad you're ok. Don't feel stupid. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> At least you're aware of what is going on with your body. Were your tastebuds swollen for some reason and why were your boyfriend's the same? I'm glad to hear it's normal, but I'm a little curious as to why they seemed bigger?

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I dont know why they are a little bigger but they are pretty far back so I just never looked that far back before until I bit my tongue.
Depending on what I eat (like alot of salt) they turn dark red when other times they are normail pinkish. I seem to have noticed a little more coating on the back of my tongue than normal so I bought a tongue brush like my dentist said. I'm seeing him again on Nov 12th to have a crown put on so I'll double check with him again that nothing is wrong.
Hey I see you are in arizona! What part? I'm in Gilbert.
