Can I take prenatal vitamins even if I am not trying to get pregnant?

Good morning,

Can I take prenatal vitamins even though I am not trying to get pregnant? I have heard they are really good for you and they make your hair and nails stronger.

I am not planning on having babies for a year or so but I just want to make sure taking these vitamins will not hurt my body since I am not preparing to carry a baby yet.

Thank you!

Hi,I really wouldn't if I were you...I continued taking my prenatal vitamins after I had my daughter for several months.
Well, I had some random tests to make sure all was well and my doctor yelled at me for continuing to take my prenatal vitamins. She said too much of certain vitamins can permanently damage organs and stop immediately.Prenatal vitamins are meant for TWO people (you and your baby) and can be bad if you are not pregnant.

Taking a regular multi vitamin would give you the same perceived benefits without the extra danger.

Hello,
Many people I know take prenatals in place of the multi vitamin. I used to take them, but found that a good multi vitamin, with an iron suppliment did just the same for me. They are great for hair and nails if that is what you are looking for, but then again so is biotin. Smile. Other thank that, I don't think there is anything wrong with taking them if that is just your preference or what you have available.

i'm not a doctor, but i always heard only to take prenatal vitamins while you are trying to conceive and when pregnant. other than that id just take the multi vitamin. just as "whenitrains" said, there are too many of certain vitamins in prenatals just for yourself. they have a very high percentage of things you dont need excessive amounts of. ultimately it is each individuals choice though.
