Hair loss

My sister is 22 years old. Over the last year, she has lost a lot of hair on especially the top part of her head, you can see her scalp. She's not balding but it is very thin at the top. She used to have the thickest hair - everyone would comment on it.

She went to see her doctor who said it was normal and didn't even ask her if she was stressed or about her diet.

She's going for blood tests tomorrow.

Can anyone advise?

Re: Hair loss

scribbler128: It's not normal to be losing your hair at 22. Adding some zinc to your diet can help. See if she can get her hormones checked and see if she's low in progesterone. Alot of times that's a culprit especially at menopause. Even though she's not at that stage she could still have hormone problems.

Re: Hair loss

Could also be hypothyroidism...my hair falls out in clumps when my thyroid levels are off.

Re: Hair loss

There is also a thing called alopecia areata- it is a condition where hair falls out, usually from the scalp.

I believe it is thought to be an auto-immune condition and is triggered by stress.

If it is this, the hair does grow back after awhile, a couple of months maybe. Please look it up, as I don't know a real lot about it.

Good luck to you and your sister.
