areola changing colors

Hello. I am twenty-one years old, and recently (within the last week), I've noticed that my left areola has gotten considerably lighter. To clarify, I am biracial and have always had darker/tanner areolas. So there is a notable difference.
I'm wondering if anyone can lend me some insight as to what could be causing this? I've read on various sites that the areola changing colors is a classic sign of pregnancy. However, I have never been sexually active (thus ruling pregnancy out) and I've only heard of them getting darker. No one seems to have heard of this.
On top of the areola getting lighter, I have also been having chest pains and pains in my underarms. Though it could be a coincidence.

If anyone knows of any reasons the areola would get lighter, I could use the knowledge. Much obliged.

Re: areola changing colors

Make an appointment with your doctor!! This may be a sign of breast cancer. Do you do monthly breast self exams? Do a breast self exam and see if you notice any difference or more pain

No matter what you feel/don't feel on the breast self exam, please get in to see your doctor soon. Any change in appearance or tenderness in the breasts can indicate breast cancer. Early detection is key. Even if no one in your family has had it, only 5% of breast cancer cases are genetic. I don't mean to frighten you, and hopefully it's nothing, but please don't overlook it!
