Re: Can I make myself infertile or sterile?

Dark Stranger,

I am just out of college and have not wanted to have children since I was 15 years old. I am finally at a point in life where I can afford to get the Essure treatment done as my current insurance covers a large amount of it. However, I was denied this treatment by care provider because they felt I would regret it.When in reality I regret having to get an IUD that will cost me the same amount of money and has more side effects than sterilization because of society expectations pushed on me by my doctor. If I am willing to sign the waiver its my decision to make not theirs. I am tired of saying what other people want to hear because it is the social normative. I rather not have to go through the pain staking process of arguing for an abortion because they think I will regret that decision too. I have watched my friends have children and I am not interested in the demands of raising a child. My Dr. was not interested in my arguments just her personal story about how she had her child at 30 and had been undecided before then. I am not undecided I would like to be free of a nagging responsibility. I want to quit my job if I hate it. I want to go on vacation when I want too. I want to read a book without being interrupted. I want to sleep the full 8 hours every night. I want to live in a house I can afford comfortably because I don't need more space or have to live near a school. I never want credit card debt a car loan or to live paycheck to paycheck. Out of all the things I want in life a kid isn't one of them. What right do these Doctors have to decide their opinion out weighs my personal choices.Yes, I am a woman but this doesn't bind me to childbearing , house keeping or docile behavior. Let me be who I am and don't discriminate against me because I don't want to have kids.Don't deny me a procedure that is available to all those women that are done making their families just because I don't want one .

Re: Can I make myself infertile or sterile?

So, I'll just share my personal story. I did not want children. Hell, I still don't like other ppl's kids! However, when I met my husband and decided to get married, he DID want children, and I honestly wanted to have children with him. It was the first time in my life that I felt that way. I can tell you that as a teenager and young adult, I was 100% positive that I did not EVER want children. But, life happens, things change. When I got pg with our first, EVERYONE was surprised, because I had expressed my views about never wanting kids. Now, we have 3 awesome kids, and I wouldn't change that for the world.

Please accept the wisdom of those older than you and do not do anything permanently. When you are young, you think you know what you want. Only time and experience will honestly tell you what you want in the future. People older than you KNOW this, because they have lived through this!
