Red face intrauterine fibroid removal - when will bleeding stop?

Hi. I've been bleeding between periods for a year now. Sometimes its spotting, sometimes I have two "real" periods a month. I went to an OBGYN, had an ultrasound, was told that it must be hormonal. She put me on lo-ogestrel. The bleeding didn't stop.
Saw a hormonal specialist, but my hormones were mostly fine (high cortisol, though).
Saw an acupuncturist/herbalist.

Finally went to see another ob-gyn, and as she was doing an exam she saw that I had a fibroid. It was supposedly a rare type -- it had come out of my uterus and through my cervix. Its called a pedunculated intrauterine fibroid (submucosal). **She twisted the stalk/peduncle of the fibroid, and removed it that way.

She put me on a new birth control, and says if I'm still bleeding in 3 months, we'll talk.

I've been bleeding for a year, and I can't handle anymore! My first ultrasound didn't even SHOW the fibroid, so maybe I have more, maybe I don't.

How long did it take you to stop bleeding after fibroid removal or how long did it take you to get back to "normal"? It's been a week and a half (I know, short period of time), but I'm still not bleeding on cycle. She said the spot where she removed the fibroid had healed (after a week). I just started my new b/c today, so the bleeding I'm having isn't from the switch. And it's not period bleeding, because I had my period in the beginning of the week, and the bleeding stopped. It just started back up yesterday.

How long does it take your uterine muscles to heal/be able to contract properly again?

I didn't have a fibroid removed, but a polyp. I bled for about 11 days post-op. Hope that helps, and hope you're feeling better soon.

Re: intrauterine fibroid removal - when will bleeding stop?

I'm not clear from your post, are you saying that you did have the fibroid removed? Did you have surgery? Or are you just assuming that it's gone because the doctor put you on the pill?

If you had surgery and had it removed, then it depends on which type of surgery you had, how long it will take to stop bleeding. It was over a week after my laprotomy that I finally stopped bleeding. I'm not sure how long it takes if it's removed via laproscope because that's far less invasive so it's possible the bleeding may not be as long.

But from your post it looks like you just assume it's gone just because you were taking the pill? That's actually not possible, fibroids don't spontanously disappear. Once they're there, they stay there and sometimes stay the same size or sometimes get too big, which is when they start bleeding and causing all kinds of problems requiring surgery to remove it.

Re: intrauterine fibroid removal - when will bleeding stop?

Thanks everyone. I had the fibroid removed (she twisted the stalk/peduncle) and it came off. I bled for a few days after this, then the bleeding stopped. Now the bleeding has resumed. I've been on birth control the whole time, and my bleeding is not matching my pill-cycle. She started me on a different pill -- the new pack started when I would have renewed my old pack, so I haven't skipped or missed any pill days. I'm just not sure why, on day 4 of my new pill pack, I'm still bleeding.
