early mammogram ?

my wife is 36 yrs. old. she just had her yearly gyno appt. and all went well. her doctor checks her breasts and said they are fine. she gave her the option to have an early mammogram done (i guess drs and more women are doing this) IF she wants to go. at 40 she said she should go each year. thank God nobody on her mothers side had breast cancer. her paternal grandmother did die from it, but this was in the mid 1970s and she never went to any doctors. our concern: is it worth doing one this early if no signs are there? is it worth the risk to the radiation? any help would be great. thanks!

Re: early mammogram ?

It would probably be a good thing to get a baseline when you know all is clear. Then the would have soemthing to compare it to later. I wish they would do that with bone density scans. My doctor is on my case about mine but I maintain I've always probably been this way as I am a petite white female. Since they don't do them till you're menopausal, how do they know if anything has changed? Heck, you're in your 50's by then!

And no, the radiation isn't a problem.

Re: early mammogram ?

I agree. I would opt to have it. It's good baseline information.
