Longer Periods at 35
My name is Frances. Starting June 2010 shortly after a regular pap smear, I started having my period. It was a medium bleed for six days and it stopped. I thought it was over. However, I was mistaken. Two days later it started bleeding heavy so I called my gynecologlist and she scheduled me for a vaginal sonogram. The heavy bleeding lasted two days and overall my period lasted ten days. When I had the sonogram the bleeding had already stopped and the results were normal. Since then I have had long periods lasting anywhere from five to about nine days. Before I was on birth control pills my periods lasted about three to five days. While on birth control pills my periods were about two to five days. After I went off the pill my periods lasted about five days. Sometimes they lasted seven days. Now my periods drag out to about a little over a week some cycles. It starts off with a light bleed the first two to five days. By day five it goes into a heavy bleed and continues until day seven. Then it is either a light bleed for a day or it just stops. This past summer every time my period stops I seem to have some spotting between periods. I seldom had spotting before this. And sometimes after ovulation I have spotting. I'm getting frustrated because I have been trying to get pregnant with no success. I'm thinking of going to the fertility clinic to find out what is really wrong with me. But first I want to see my gynecologist to see if there are any further tests I can take before going to the clinic. I'm overweight. I'm 170-175 pounds for a five foot two frame. I'm 35 years old. Ever since I have gone off birth control I have put on about twenty pounds and I can't seem to lose it no matter what diet I go on. What should I do? What could this possibly be?
