Josie,
I understand the embarrassment of going to the doctor and talking about this. It helps that I have a female doctor, but I was still embarrassed. The doctor and nurse were very nice and professional, not at all insensitive to my discomfort and embarrassment. If I had been made to feel uncomfortable for any reason, I would find another doctor. Some are better at others about trying to preserve your dignity; some haven't a clue. You know what I mean?
I thought I had an external hemorrhoid. I'd never heard of skin tags until yesterday. What I do know is that for me it was caused by hemorrhoids. I had apparently had an external one that healed and left the skin tag. I still have some internal hemorrhoids that she's going to fix, too. So when I take time off and have this done, I'll just tell people it's for hemorrhoid surgery because that's exactly what it is.
When I talked to the doctor about it, I didn't mention that I wanted it removed just because of how it looks, because that's not the only reason. I said it was because it's uncomfortable, gets irritated and bleeds, and is difficult to keep clean. And if you want to be really gross, it's also because it keeps there from being a good "seal" down there and there's some leakage sometimes, and that's just not something I want to deal with anymore. Those are all good reasons to get it fixed. But not liking how it looks is also a big one for me.
I'll let you know what happens. I still haven't heard back from the doctor's office on the date yet. I hope it's soon.
Susan
