Susan,
I was thinking about you on Monday, too. Hope you have behind you first b.m.
I might share with you, Josie my experiences in answer to your questions.
Generally, they don't stitch there as there is a greater risk of an infection. I had one stitch which disolved on the 8th day. I thought the discomfort in the area wasn't as bad as after having children. I took stool softeners twice a day, which constipated me (very unusual reaction I was told, but I didn't go between Wed to Sat, and then again following Monday). I had sitz baths, and I quickly dicovered, that water provided the best relief immidately after bm. I usually quickly hopped under the shower to ease the pain, and then sat in the sitz bath. Walking and standing wasn't too bad, although I felt like my stomach was glued to my back. That could be attributed to being sick each time I was given morphine. I had a first look at it at home, on the seventh day after, and if I had the surgeon there, he would pay for what he did to me!!!! I was left with one big area of exposed flesh (square of something like 3x3cm, more inside?), one smaller where the stitch was. The skin grew from the outside to cover some of this, but there are still 2 areas which have to toughten up (as I was told). I guess it was probably swollen initially, but really that wasn't such a big problem.
Hope to hear from you soon, Susan. Take care
Gosia (known as "gs", I am coming out!!!)
