Re: help wanted, and possible ...
Hi, fellow sufferer.
Hope I can help you. Am 82 years old. Doing very well now, in remission, after 1 1/2 years of severe ulcerative colitis. Eat most of my meals at home because I know what I'm eating. Eating at restaurants usually upsets my digestion.
Stress reduction is important. Have babied myself and reduced tensions by saying "No" more often. When invited by friends to eat at their house, I tell them what I can & can't eat. Walk 45 min. several times a week with a friend. Go up & down stairs daily often each day.
But also have followed advice of nutrtionist for food and MD's advice for medications: prescribed Asacol (2 3x/da ---reduced dosage when in remission) and Rowasa enemas (only during periods when bleeding)& Metamucil (1tbs/day or more).
Very important: Drink min. 8 glasses of water/day. Other liquids: chicken soup frequently, which I make. Soy milk.
Eat proteins 3x/day (lots of soy products, eggs,
chicken, fish)and only cooked or canned vegetables. Starches: At first ate lots of plain rice & baked potatoes. Now eat oatmeal, white bread. Eat only cooked or canned fruits (but not grapefruit). I put banana in bowl with my oatmeal, then cook in microwave. Enjoy applesauce.
AVOID all dairy products. AVOID all beans (this includes peas). AVOID all 4 members of the cabbage family, onions and fibrous vegetables such as celery, even when cooked. Stay off of chocolate & nuts. AVOID all harsh condiments.
Good luck! I expect to stay in remission for the rest of my life. Hope you can too.
