My best friend, 29 years old, had brain surgery to remove a pilocytic astrocytoma over 4 months ago. The doctors originally said she would have nothing more than a little short term memory loss. However, it took her 2 weeks before she even opened up her eyes after surgery. At this time, she will only speak maybe 5 words a day and she is difficult to understand. She has trouble walking, swallowing ,staying awake and incontinence. She cries frequently and her short term memory is shot. They sent her home from rehab after only a couple of weeks. I feel like she has been "given up on" by the medical profession. They claim that the reason she is having so many problems is because the tumor was near the hypothalamus. I have found all kinds of information on brain tumors but very little on surgeries near the hypothalamus and their outcome. Any information related to this would be most appreciated.
Looking for hope,
Robyn
