: I am looking to find out exactly what radionecrosis is and what my father can expect in the months to come. He is recovering from radiation therapy for throat cancer and is just miserable with the pain and discomfort of swallowing. Doc says it is either radionecrosis or more cancer. He says necrosis can be as devastating as cancer. Does anyone know about this? Please enlighten me if you can.
radionecrosis refers to the death of the ajacemt tossie that occurs whenever there is radiation. it should heal as he gets further away from tadiation. he probably has so much scar tissue from the radiation it may be hard to determine what's scar tissue, and what isn't. along with strong pain meds, sometimes a feeding tube until it heals or having someone look down his throat directly to see what is going on can help. it is devestating, but it will clear up.
