Having three family members who have had cancer, it is clear to us that knowing what services hospices provide can be a big help. We've met people who did NOT get good care and had terrible times with poor pain control, suffering while watching a daughter in agony, even with a hospice!
There is a nonprofit organization that provides the most complete information on hospice on the web: Hospice Patients Alliance and gives free assistance to those having trouble getting the care they need. Nowadays, we have to be our own advocate to get quality health care and to protect our families.
Hospices are businesses and they DON'T always do what's right for the patient. Sometimes cancer patients find that the hospice is more concerned about maintaining a good relationship with the physician's group that refers them patients (money in their pocket) than they are with the patients themselves. Don't think politics enters into hospice? Politics and money enters into everything...hospice and cancer patients included.
