: my mother was diagnosed with non- small cell undiffreni[ not sure about the spelling] lung cancer in sept 99. She has since under gone chemo[carbo and taxol] with remission after three mons. The ca returned in june and she is now on gemzar and carboplantin. I have probably spelled this wrong. Has anyone tried this combo? Can you tell me about any drug trials or new drugs that this type of cancer has responded well to? Thanks for any info you can give.

the eastern cooperative onclogy group did a clinical trial trying 4 different combonations of chemo for non small cell stages 3b and 1v and they found the combonation of gemzar and cisplatin produced the best 1 year survival figures. cisplatin is being thought to replace carboplatin in general for first line treatment. they reported this in the big american society of oncology meeting in may of this year. you may want to ask your mother's doc why she's on carboplatin instead of cisplatin. there are lots of other things that can be tried also, but carboplatin in general is being phased out by people who are up on the latest research of this disease.
