: : : : My family has a pattern developed now of breast cancer, both my mother and grandmother had breast cancer. I've read and heard that breast cancer is genetic. Does this mean that I'm doomed to follow in their steps? I'm only 30 and I don't have any signs of breast cancer when I give myself self-exams. I eat healthy and am active. I'll appreciate any advice from those who had breast cancer or know someone who had breast cancer.
: : : if you want to know if you have a gene that carrys breast cancer it involves a simple blood test. the two main breast genes are brac1 and brac2, even if your mother carries it there is only a 50% chance that you would. some people with a history like yours want to know this, and some don't.
: : Hi, rosilita, thanks so much for your reply. Yeah, I just read about the brca1 and 2 genes on the web. I'm wondering if you have ever been to dna.com. I just found it and it's pretty interesting but I wanna know what else is out there that is good. Thanks again, rosilita.
: rosie, do you know what the national cancer institue pdq is? There are several prevention trials which involve eating low fat and high in vegtables, so you are on the right track. i don't have the family history you do, but i have very dense breasts and have had one reading slightly under cancer. i was offered tamoxifen, but turned it down. if i actually did have cancer, i would take it. i am waiting to see how the star trial turns out. i choose close observation for my problem. i get mam every 6 months, and i picked a doctor who is the best in the hospital i associate my medical care with.one more thought, if you choose genetic testing you might find you don't carry the gene, and then your risk is not much more then the average person, wheras mine will always be higher because of my one bad biopsy and dense breasts. good luck to you, whatever you do. oh no, i have never been to the site you mentioned.
Rosie, take a look at the biopulse.com. Breast cancer is one that they are getting the best results with. They will put you in touch with the patients as well.
