: my older brother was just diagnosed with prostate cancer, and he is only 32 years old! How can this be (isn't he too young)? i am desperately seeking information on the disease. is it hereditary (my father died a premature death, but his brother died at the age of 59 from prostate cancer)? when do i need to start getting checked (i am 25)?
your brother is extremly young for prostate cancer, you could have a family gene mutation. usually it is suspected when there are 2 or more cases diagnosed young within the same family. the ohter corralation being made, or speculated about depending upon which gene the mutation could be is that if you have sisters they could also be at risk for breast cancer. there are a lot of different genes being hinted at playing a role in familal prostate cancer. once again go to a genetic counselor, they take a sample of your blood and check the known suspected genes and will let you know. even if you don't have it any of your other brothers or sisters should be checked. most doctors wouldn't be alarmed at your uncle, but your brother is very young, which puts more suspision on a mutation being the case. only a blood test could tell you the facts.
