Darla- I hate to hear the bad news about your mom.
My mom was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in July. The doctors in our town were very negative about her prognosis. We made her an appointment at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. After going there, we have hope. They gave her a lot better survival rate. She started taking her treatments at Duke but had to come back to our local oncologist for treatments because of insurance purposes. Her local oncologist is following Duke's treatment plan. The doctor even said Duke was more aggressive than they are here. My advice is to get a second opinion. You can find lots of good information about cancer hospitals. Duke is conducting lots of trials now so she might even be eligible for one of them. There is also a great service called Corporate Angel Flight. Corporations provide free airfare to and from cancer treatment centers for patients. If you call the National Health Institute, they will give you a list of clinical trials for your area.
I believe you will find that the top cancer centers try to stop problems before they start. They seem to use the newest drugs that alleviate lots of symptoms. Best of luck!
