I just found this board, but thought if maybe you were still reading I could possibly answer your question, although I am not a medical professional.
The contents that were expelled was probably bile from the stomach. This would happen, most likely after death because all of the muscles relax and don't "hold" anything in it's place anymore.
I hope it's a comfort to know he didn't experience this while he was still living.
