Last night at a support group I mentioned that my spouse is very sad. I said that part of her problem is she sees the prime years of her life slipping away. She has been disabled from age 33 to age 47. She is grieving for her lost youth and the thought of more of the same to come.
On my way home it sunk in that I too have lost those same years from my life.
This is not to say that we have been dead these last 14 years. We have enjoyed life to our maximum potential given our limitations. It is just that we could have done more were it not for accident and disease.
So I grieve too. At the same time I take great pride in my role as caregiver. I know that I have gone the extra zillion miles over the years. I had no choice, but I did do it. I will continue.
