: Mom has Alzheimers, we have run ourselves into the ground and now pay 5 different people to care for her. I am interested in finding a live in care giver to provide consistancy and reduce costs. Her money will not last for long but she has a home. What is the best way to find a live in care giver. If you know of a registery or listing or something, please let me know. We live in Gainesville, Florida if that helps. Thanks for any help.

Maurice: I am someone who worked for An Alterra Memory care facility. They sincerely are one of if not the best I have seen. They have on occassions asked me to do private care and I was more than happy to get the extra work. My training includes respecting and understanding the person who has the altzheimers as well as working with "whatever their reality was at the moment". I have also been trained in cpr and first aid. Even if you only wanted someone to help while you take vacations etc I am certain that Alterra (there are over 40 of them in Florida) would refer you.
And most certainly if one director wouldn't ,another would simply because they are
people who "color outside the lines" and they work well with everyone.
I have often wondered how families survive this disease because it does take so much one on one as well as adjusting your life.Congrats to you for making it this far.It doesn't just "seem
hard",it IS hard. And those who love their mom ,dads, aunts, uncles anyway should be blessed in an extra special way.
Offering a quality lifestyle as much as possible
is the goal any good careperson has.
I hope you contact your local altzheimers organization/senior citizens also because they
may have some day care programs that would simply life for your mom and give her the parts of life she can still enjoy.
You will find when in groups that altzheimers people make their friends and they tend to remember who is and who is not ..funny as it may seem. I thoroughly approve as you can see of ALTERRA memory care training because they make you know that "meeting and EXCEEDING the need of the client is mandatory".
I have moved from the area I worked in previously so am not working in that field now but wanted to share what I knew.
Feel free to write if you want to converse.
