: I AM ASKING FOR HELP.. I KNOW I HAVE CARPAL TUNNEL, I HAVE HAD NUMB FINGERS ON AND OFF FOR OVER 3 YEARS.. BUT NOW ALL AT ONCE MY LEFT HAND STARTED GETTING NUMB AND PAINFULL, THEN AFTER A FEW DAYS, IT WENT UP MY ARM TO MY ELBOW, WITH IN A FEW MORE DAYS IT WENT UP IN TO THE TOP OF MY ARM... NOW IT IS IN MY SHOULDER AND CHEST. THEY HAVE SCHEDULED ME FOR AN EMG OF THE HAND ARM AND AFTER THEY TOOK XRAYS OF MY SPINE THEY ADDED ON FOR AN EMG OF MY NECK AREA... I AM ON ALLOT OF PAIN MEDICATION PLUS HAD A CORTAZONE SHOT IN MY WRIST. DOES CARPAL TUNNEL RADIATE PAIN THAT FAR?? I WAS TOLD THAT THE EMG WILL BE, IN NICE WORDS, HECK.. BUT IF THE PAIN ALREADY IS HECK...WHAT WILL THIS DO?? MY FATHER TOLD ME NOT TO CONSIDER SURGERY BECAUSE IT WILL GO AWAY WITH TIME.. AND SURGERY COULD LEAVE MY HAND IN WORSE SHAPE... IS THIS TRUE?? WILL TIME HEAL IT??
: PLEASE HELP BECAUSE MY EMG IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?? DOES THE PAIN AND OR TINGLING TRAVEL UP THAT FAR????

Hi Shirley,
yes the pain can travel up your arm and into your shoulder, neck , and chest. When this first came on for me ,I thought I was having a Heart Attack! My fingers were numb of course, but I also had pain and tingling in my arm and shoulder and tightness in my neck and chest. All this on the left side. After a quick trip to the hospital confirmed I was'nt having a Heart Attack. I had further tests confirming Carpal Tunnel. As you have already heard the EMG is no fun at all. Along with that they will do a NCV which shows how the nerves are affected. As far as this getting better on its own....don't count on it!
I lived with it in both wrists for many years and tried everything from medication to splints to excersizes and the cortizone shots. I finally had enough and pursued surgery. I had my left hand done on march 15th and am having my right hand done April 4th. I went with the open incision surgery. My hand feels great! I started Physcial Therapy 1 week after the surgery and got my stiches out at 2 weeks. My therapist said about another 2 weeks and I should be at full strength.
If you decide on surgery, make sure you find someone who specializes in this type of surgery, don't be affraid to ask how many times they have done it! Therapy afterward is just as important!
If you have any other questions, please post and I will answer if I can.
Good Luck!
