In Reply to: 8 Year Old Feeling Social Isolation... posted by ALLEN on November 29, 1999 at 22:51:03:

: Hello,
: I'm looking for anybody with suggestions on how to help me help my 8 Year old boy cope with the Social Implications of CP... He has Spastic Diplegia which is affecting only his legs... He is pretty ambulatory and uses no support equipment, but still He feels he has no friends because of this and kids are beginning to tease him somewhat...
: We continue to stand behind him and work with him on this but he is really taking it hard lately... Please, If anybody can provide us with some ideas, we would greatly appreciate them... Thanks So Much...

Hi, Boy do I empathize with you!! I have an 11 year old daughter with the same type of CP and it seems like we have been battling the same problems forever.I am not sure but I think age has a lot to do with my daughters feelings.I have debated about counseling but I don't feel it is necessary yet.I have made sure that she understands why people tease stare or make comments { insecurity, ignorance, fear} and right or wrong I have tried very hard to teach her to deal with it with humor&a sense that the kids or adults doing it don't know any better. We talk alot about it, and she prays alot about it both seem to help. Does your son have any friends "like him" that he can talk to? There are also some wonderful Email exchange sites on the web all for kids& people with CP. Maybe your son& my daughter could exchange if that would help. I wish you the best of luck and if you find any better advice than what I have given would you please share?
