: Hello, My sister has a daughter who is currently diagnosed with CP w/probable mental retardation. Her daughter will be 3 in June and isn't walking or talking. Most recently, she has started having seizures. She is under the care of a doc in Boise Idaho, and has and will be evaluated and followed by a doc in Salt Lake.
: What I am trying to work on is the financial side of this problem. She applied for a SSI disability and was turned down. I am not sure why, She and her husband are in debt about $100,000.00 (not including their house payment), alot of this debt coming from the medical care for my niece. Her husband works in construction, so there are times that he is out of work, or when working, is out of town. She hasn't found a way to work because of the care of her daughter.
: What kind of experience have people had out there with a disabled child and obtaining SSI benefits? Are there foundations that help with money? I am looking for as much info as I can find.
: Thanks for reading and helping!
NJ has a catastrophic illness fund. Check with your county board of social sevices to see if your state has one.
