Hi,

I have mild CP. I have been driving for over 10 years now. I would get an evaluation done by a person who has experience with handicapped people to make sure that it is nothing more than a perceptual problem or just nervousness.

I was extremely nervous when I was learning to drive. I got my license the first time I tried for it. Then I went back and got more lessons with hand controls even though I really didn't need them. It helped build up my confidence a bit. Then I was able to drive a normal car after that.

Practicing a lot helps and so does learning how to compensate for any potential problems. It may take him a while longer than the average person to do it, but he should be okay if there are no "serious issues" that need to be addressed that would make driving impossible for him.

Check with your local independent living center for help on finding someone who can test him and make sure that he is okay about driving.
