: I am 28 years old with mild CP. I had my achilles tendons stretched when I was 4 1/2, which made it much easier to walk. I will be having the surgery done again (one side at a time) within the next few months. The first surgery should be done within the next 6 - 8 weeks. I will let you know how things go and the results I get. The few things I do know is that it will be done in day surgery (I will be awake), and my doctor has decided to go with casts for 6 weeks. My doctor isn't at all worried about the surgery, he does quite a few adults each year. One of his patients was in a wheelchair, supposedly with no hope of ever walking again. That same person now walks with crutches, but at least he's walking again. Have any of your doctors told you what to expect in the next 10 years? When I was 18 I was still completely independent, and walked anywhere I wanted to, even on ice. The only obstacle was a flight of stairs (more than 4 or 5) with no railing. Now I can't even get up and down a curb without help, and if it's slippery outside I can't go anywhere without help. Ask lots of questions and don't let anyone tell you "there's nothing we can do".
You sound like you are a person who has alot of ambition...I only hope that when my son is older, now 14 he will be the same...Keep your head to the sky!!! I have spoken with a man Dr. Vito in Georgia and he sounds like someone you need to talk to!!! Jean
