the novacain, when they stick the needle in and numb the area. They drill out the tooth down to the roots, then they have these tiny little files and file inside the root. It's done pretty much the same way they drill the other parts of your tooth, it's just done with a smaller hand held one because it would probably hurt a lot worse if they used the power one. And they're longer than the regular drill.
You don't have to get a sedative, thats just an option. I never had one, but it is offerd because some people get really really scared when they go to the dentist.
Make sure it's capped....mine wasn't and it cracked, i didn't find out untill after that happened that they're suposed to cap the molars because so much pressure is put on them when you chew and the tooth gets brittle once the roots are removed.
