: : : My 8-year old son has Strep Throat for the second time in 2 mths. Actually, he's been on Penicillin for 10 days, off less than one, and it is back again. This is the same thing that happened in December. This go around with Penicillin was double the MGs from the first, but here we are again. The pediatrician mentioned that he could be a carrier, but it was too soon to really tell that. It's getting frustrating, because he's of course contagious for the first 24-hrs. on meds., which means no school and no work for me--not to mention him feeling pretty miserable. Has anyone else had this type of problem? Did it get better? Did the doctor give you anything besides Penicillin? Thanks for any feedback.
: : i had that problem when i was younger. they had all of my family and friends tested to see if one was a carrier. no one came up positive. i eventually grew out of it. however i do know that removing the tonsils will not cure strep. i have been advised by an ent that you can still get strep if you do not have tonsils. just a thought if you were pondering that. i know it may not have been much help, sorry
: Last Fall, my 5 year old came down w/ strep. It is now April and this is strep #5. Each time, he is put on Augmentin (Amoxicillan doesn't work on him) and it has cleared up only to get reinfected in another month or so. Apparently, my 3 year old is a strep carrier and continues to give it to my 5 year old. The 3 year old NEVER displayed any symptoms of strep!!! We only found out when the doctor decided to test him "just in case." He has been resistant to ALL antibiotics (4 different types) So, now we have an appt to see a pediatric ENT about the removal of both boys' tonsils! I'm sorry I don't have better news for you. I'm anxious about both of my children undergoing surgery!
My son had strep 4 times last summer and 2 times the winter before that. My younger daughter also had it 3 times that year. I thought something was wrong with his immune system. Dr. tested all in our family and everyone was negative. He/she did however attend day care and possibly someone there was the carrier. he was treated with penicillian. The dr. said lets wait it out before we send to an ENT. He was correct, as hard as it was he finnaly did stop getting strep and has not had it in a year and 1/2.
Sometimes waiting some situations out is the right thing to do. And by the way Penicillian, amoxicillan and augmentan are all in the same family and can be used to treat strep.
