How clean was the lake you were in? If you can you may want to test the lake water, make sure there is no bacteria in it.
If the lake water had bacteria in it and they swallowed it that could be the cause. I have no idea what the solution is but just watch them very very carefully for signs of dehidration, i'm sure the doctor has already told you all about it. make sure they're weight it checked also, you want to make sure that they aren't getting thinner.
