: You are definetly on the right track by asking this question! If what you have under your eyes is indeed water retention, then PLEASE be aware that it is NOT surgically correctable! Many doctors go ahead and perform surgery anyway, and the results ALWAYS are worse than the original problem. I have spent the past 2 years researching this very problem. Many factors can attribute to chronic edema -- thyroid conditions, angioedema, diet, allergies, stress, alcohol, etc -- the list is quite long. I suggest you look into hypothyroidism first, and then take it from there. It is easy to diagnose the difference between water and fat; an endocrinologist will be able to help you better than a cosmetic surgeon. But get several opinions, and do a lot of research yourself. Bless you for being smarter than I was!

Kim, please let me know what type of puffiness you had and what procedure you had done. My bags are called malar bags, on the upper cheekbone area, and they're definitely water-filled, an ice cube gets them down somewhat. I'm looking into surgery and I would love to know what happened with you. This problem does seem to be not easily correctable, but I'm desperate. Thanks! gloria
