: : I am a 19 year old college student who is exploring my future options. My goal in life is to help make a difference in the CF community, whether it be helping one person or one hundred. I was a nursing major but decided that it was too dangerous. Now I am psychology major and am interested in couseling terminally ill children and adolescents. Does anyone have any advice for me or know someone with CF who has traveled a similar path?

: Dear Melanie,

: Your message REALLY hit home with me as I have a nineteen year old daughter (and a fourteen year old daughter) who also has CF. Kari always wanted to work in the medical field, but was advised that it would be too dangerous (germ wise). This was a huge blow for her, as you know just one more thing in her life that CF robbed her of. Unlike yourself, she lost all hope and basically herself as well and turned to drugs. We now have TWO battles to fight CF, and drug abuse. Speaking from a "moms" point of view, I think you would be a great asset in the counseling field. Who can give better advice than someone who's "been there"? I wish you the best of luck.

Dear Lisa,
Thank you so much for your reply! I am so sorry to hear about your daughter! I pray that the drug(s) she is using is not too serious and I have faith that she WILL come to her senses at some point. Just about everyone I know with CF has had a "low point," and sometimes, depression. Everyone deals in different ways but usually we all come to the same conclusion and that is that CF is not going to go away, and it will continue to get worse and worse unless we take care of ourselves. In high school I used to drink way too much, then when I came to college I smartened up and realized all the damage I had been doing and realized that something had to be done immidiately. Please feel free to email me or even if your daughter wants to email me at melly527@hotmail.com Thank you for your support! And I wish you and your family the best!
