: I know that it's possible for a child to get CF if both parents are just carriers, but can a child become just a carrier of CF if just ONE of the parents is just a carrier and the other parent is not a carrier at all?

: Just wondering because my niece (2 weeks old) has been determined to be "at least" a carrier at this point. Have to wait a big longer for the sweat test to determine if CF actually exists, but neither one of her parents is aware of any CF in their respective families -- one of them obviously has to have the recessive gene, but do BOTH have to have it even for it to show up at all? Thanks.

Cyndee,
Only one parent has to pass on the recessive gene for the child to become a carrier. If both parents passed on the recessive gene, the child would have CF rather than be a carrier. Both parents don't have to be carriers - only one. If the carrier passes the gene on, then the child is a carrier.

Good Luck!
