Hey Simon--
I have a son and a brother with CF. In order to have a cf kid, both parents must be carriers. The thing most people don't realize is just exactly how common it is. Statistics can vary, but according to "Cystic Fibrosis: A Guide for Patients and Family", one in 29 are carriers. Check out www.cff.org for stats as well. You can easily be a carrier and not have a known family history--my husband had no family history. A simple blood test can screen your DNA to find out if you're a carrier. Check with your doctor--they may refer you to a geneticist, or they may do the test for you. Either way, if you test yourself and find out you're not a carrier, then there is no way you could be the baby's father. The test seems worth your piece of mind. Also, you will find that cf kids are amazing. They are typically over achievers who live life to its absolute fullest. If the baby is yours you will be doing yourself an incredible favor by allowing yourself the chance to know a cf kid and become part of the community.
Good luck and email if we can help.
