: Hi, What are the symptoms of an absess? The right side of my face in front of the ear swells about the size of golf ball when chewing and after a while swelling goes down some. I can't get in to see the dentist for 6 days so I went to the emergency room, the doctor said he couldnt say what exactly it was said maybe an absessed tooth, but i have no pain in any of my teeth and no gum pain or swelling. He gave me antibiotcs, motrin and sent me home said to see my reg. Doctor Cant see my reg Doctor for 5 days. Could this be an absessed tooth? Any advice would be appeciated! Thanks in advance!

Tess...Sounds like you may also want to pursue the possiblility of a blocked or infected parotid gland duct. The gland is located in the posterior jaw area in front of the ear and below the ear. If the swelling only occurs when you are hungry or are going to eat that is when the saliva gland begins to function and build up fluid. If the duct is blocked or infected and the saliva cannot get out of the gland the gland will swell. Hope this helps.
