Perhaps its just a matter of the tooth hitting prematurely. Often times with temps and crowns, the tooth is a little 'high' and when you bite this tooth hits first. Therefore, its subjected to all the biting force and can result in a whole lot of discomfort. If you are hitting early the teeth below will be getting undo trauma as well.
I'm not sure in what situation you needed the crown. If it was for a deep filling or a fracture, perhaps more work is needed. Hard to tell here. I would certainly call your dentist and speak with him. There should be no need to be taking pain medicine at this point.
