I just went to a new dentist and he did a full oral exam and then his hygenist (sp) did a cleaning. During his exam, he called out numbers to his assistant like "#31 3mm". He never explained to me what it was and I didn't ask (my bad). I've just been cruising the web and I now know what the numbers mean. The first is tooth number and the second is gum pocket depth. I wasn't too concened until I read further about gum disease. Two of my teeth (molars I think) had depths of 5mm. According to the web, these need treatment yet my dentist didn't say anything to me. What gives here? Is 5mm worthy of concern or are the web sites trying to drum up business? What depth does require further work and what does that work entail? The last thing this guy said to me was "See you in six months". Can I wait that long and should I even go back to him?
