: What is a root canal and why is it necessary and what does it do? I have been keeping an infection at bay for months due to two broken teeth (previously filled)and one that the top is exposed. I am nearing the end, though and had to get antibiotics (called in) for the infection as it went into my inner ear. I will have insurance soon and will take action, however, I'm not sure what the best course of action is and why. Crown, pull? Root canal? Dentistry is confusing to me (maybe the infection is in my brain!) Any comments on what a root canal is, what it does, and how it is diagnosed would be grand, or recommended web site. Also, how can I be sure having an infection for so long hasn't affected my health? I took acidophilus and 100 mg of an expectorant to keep at bay when it would flare up and cause headaches. Any comments? Thanks ahead of time!
