About one month ago I saw my dentist for a brief visit in response to a tooth (upper right second molar from back) that felt 'longer' than the surrounding ones. I also had pain when chewing because of the tooth hitting the bottom teeth before the others. My dentist looked in my mouth, then filed that tooth down until it didn't hit first. The pain continued for a few more days then went away.
Today I awoke with the same kind of pain and feeling of longness in that tooth. Within an hour I noticed a little swelling on the inside gum above this tooth. Shortly after that I noticed a small knoe on the outside gum. It has been about three hours since the swelling started and now I have a marble sized knot on the outside gum that is very purple and hot.
I called the dentist and his receptionist said I have an abcess, to take penicllin and come in on Friday so the Dr. could take a look at it. I am one of those big weenies who is terrified of dentistry of any kind and especially fearful of charlatans performing complicated tasks. I have never had a root canal and I'm scared to death! Help!
