It is a common practice for some dentist to use a rubber dam, but I have worked for many that dont . The reason for the rubber dam is to isolate the tooth. They use alot of very small files and medicines that they dont want a patient to swallow, but most dentist are very good and they can isolate the tooth with cotton rolls too. Most patients find a rubber dam very uncomfortable and scary. As for your neck being swollen , I doubt that has anything to do with your RCT , but you should have it looked at.
