: Today I FINALLY went to the dentist. Well, I had no choice. I broke my top tooth, #15, in the back there. I
: didn't know how. The dentist pulled out the little piece that was falling out anyhow. He went in and saw
: tons of bacteria had built up inside. NONE was outside so who would have known? This is what caused
: the tooth to break. He got some of it out and filled it up but he said I need a root canal. I was once told I
: needed a root canal on a bottom molar and I had it pulled instead. They told me my top tooth would grow
: downward and my bite could be off, etc. (which did happen).
: My dentist wants to save this tooth no matter what. It is a really small tooth, way in the back with swollen
: gums around it. I asked if I really need this tooth and he insists that I do.
: I hear so many bad things about root canals and people losing their tooth in the long run anyhow so why
: should I keep this tooth? I mean, should I keep this tooth and go through the whole root canal/cap thing?
: It doesn't sound like much fun.
: Thanks for any advice you can give.
Heidi, is the tooth opposing an other tooth or is that the tooth you had pulled? It is always important to save your teeth if they can be . The horror stories are usually because the patient has waited too long and now there is an infection, it is extremely difficult to do a RCT when the infection gets bad, its hard to numb the tooth and many times medication is required to be placed in the tooth several times before the RCT can be complted. If you are going to have the RCT done do so before it gets any worse and you should be fine.
