The research on the complications associated with root canal therapy dates back to 1948. Yes, dentists DO know about it. They are also aware of the complications. Yahoo search engine has a large body of information on this subject. Dental professionals that take issue with the research argue that the studies are flawed. But, I challenge their claim of a "95%" success rate with this procedure from all the problems and complications I have heard as a health professional. I will say that most dentists or endodontists who perform the procedure that tell you that nothing is wrong when you return in followup with a problem for the following reasons:
1. It is costly to re-treat a problem that is as time intensive as this procedure.
2. Dentists do not want to admit that they have complications associated with their techniques.
3. Dentists are wary of the threat of potential litigation.
4. If the dentist admits to complications from his techniques with procedures which require additional treatment at additional cost, he may run the risk of a poor profile with insurance companies who may carry his practice as a "preferred provider" for reimbursement under large company dental plans.
Most symptoms clients complain about are rooted in actual physical problems. So, don't allow dentists to get off easy by putting the problem back on you. Most professionals have to stand behind their work and are expected to keep current in updates in their respective fields. Why should we expect any less of our dentists? Keep loking until you find a dentist who is clinically competent.
