: three days ago had pain in a root canaled and capped tooth.I went to my regular dentist who did the tooth and his x-ray showed a infection below the tooth. I went to a oral surgeon who gave me a big dose of amoxiciiin and a RX for percerset and augmentin. After a night the pain went away and is gone for a day now. Did the antibiotic cure this infection for good? Or will it resuface in the future? The oral surgeon wants to do a apico and says it's my call on whether to go ahead or not.He couldn't/wouldn't say if the pain will ever come back.
Your pain is not gone for good. It will one day, maybe 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months, or even a year later, return and cause you pain again. The infection was caused by bacteria that somehow leaked through the tooth and may not have been removed completely when the root canal was done. It could also be caused from a faulty root canal, Possibly the nerve may not have been all the way removed or possibly the material used to fill in the space, where the nerve was, "came out" of the apex or end of the tooth when it was done. An apico-ectomy is a way to correct one of these types of conditions. It will remove the tip of the root/apex of the tooth, which may or may not keep the infection from returning. Ask about other options like, if possible, re-doing the root canal. Also get a second opinion from another Dentist not associated with your Dentist.
