: I have been depressed for years now. I recently broke up with a girl I was seeing for a year in a half. The break up was more her idea than mine. Now she has a new guy she is seeing and she is happy; and I'm very depressed. I feel that depression had a lot to do with our break-up in terms of me not being happy. I'm looking to go get help but don't know where to go. Should I go to a family doctor or go to a phsychologist? I'd rather go to a family doc but I don't even know what to make an appointment for. I not sure even how to find the right doctor. I have been taking St. John's Wort for about a year now and it just doesn't help. It just seems to give me mood swings. If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Thanks, : Zach Zach, Hi ! Here is what i can tell you. A family doctor can prescribe anti-depressiant medications but cannot help you work through your problems. A psychologist cannot prescribe medications but can help out by changing the way you think. Where as a psychiatrist can do the anti-depressiants and the psychotherapy both at the same time. It is just my suggestion and what i learned from my psychologist but i would strongly suggest that you see your family doctor for the medication and see a psychologist to help you work through the problems that you are having. I hope this helps out some. Take Care, Kim
